As many others my wife and I would love to see a whale shark while in Roatan. We will be at CoCoView 10/3-10/10. What is the best way to do this. Is there a recommended excursion? We would like to book it ahead of time if possible. __________________ Chris Ash |

Whale Sharks in and around Roatan are rare but you have a better chance over on Utila in seeing one. __________________

Reply with quote | #3 | Thanks Capt, I read in the FAQs that there is an all day whale shark trip to Utila available at the front desk. We are trying to determine how much money to bring. How much is that trip? __________________ Chris Ash |

Reply with quote | #4 | It's my understanding that the odds of seeing whale sharks near Utila are greater in the early part of the year. Perhaps someone with better info than me can elaborate on the best time of the year to see them.
During my stays at CCV, I don't remember any boats doing an all day trip to Utila from CCV. Maybe they used to do it, or perhaps they did have trips when I wasn't at the resort. I think that's what the new boat is going to be used for (whale shark trips, etc.). __________________ DiveBoy

Reply with quote | #5 | Hi Chris,
There are a number of items on the website that need to be updated and that particular FAQ is one of them.
However, when the new dive boat is operational, one of the optional trips will be to Utila for Whale Shark'n.
For now your best chances of seeing whale sharks is on an all day trip to West End.
Those trips cost US$50.00 per person and require a minimum of 12 people to sign up for the boat to go.
The week you will be here the resort is full; so there may be enough people interested for the West End trip to run.
As Cap'n Randy mentioned the closer you get to Utila, the higher the probability of sighting a whale shark.
The bottom line is, it is still a big crap shoot.
'Ya pays your money and 'ya takes what gets!
Some days is sweet....some days sour!

Thanks Chris I don't see the boat being ready by even the end of October at this ponit of progress. Still a lot to be installed and plumbed up and fiber glass work and windows to install, dive platform and boarding ladders to hang, electrical wiring to run and most important 2 engines to install yet and exhaust system to run then get it officially documented with the port authority of Roatan. paper work and money you know. __________________

Reply with quote | #9 | No worries Capt -- I think several of us had seen a previous post that alluded to it being ready for the first week of Oct. Just looking forward to the trip, Whale sharks or not! Chris __________________ Chris Ash |

Reply with quote | #10 | We spent a week in Utila with The Shark Research Institute to go see Whale Sharks and were shutout for the entire week. Even with the generous help of Bill Evans who sprung for an hour of plane time to try and spot one for us on the last day didn't help.
On our next trip with SRI, we went to La Paz and within 30 minutes on our first day we were snorkelling with our first of countless sharks that week. I suspect our Utila experience was unusual however we've proved it's possible, and since we were on an SRI trip we were our specifically to look for them. If you want to see Whale Sharks I'd suggest La Paz as The Sea of Cortez seems to be a bit of a "nursery", Also try Holbox as there was a filmmaker on our SRI trip in La Paz who had amazing shots of REALLY big mammas. |
